What is Foodie Camp?
Foodie Camp “Garden to Grocery to Gourmet” is a week-long daycamp for kids ages 11-13. Kids will be outside every day, having fun while learning about growing plants, benefiting their community, and preparing and eating healthy food. Camp is held at Jones Valley Urban Farm, Birmingham’s one-of-a-kind downtown organic teaching farm.
What happens at Foodie Camp?
Each day is a little different. Most activities take place literally ‘in the field’ at the organic Urban Farm planting, weeding, and harvesting vegetables and flowers. Through games, art, and fun science activities, we learn about and prepare fresh, healthy meals, and explore nature, community, and teamwork. We will work and play in the dirt, in the fresh air and sunshine, in the kitchen, and in the city itself. Campers will gain new experiences, lessons, friendships, and opportunities related to growing, understanding, and eating healthy food.
Who runs Foodie Camp?
Jones Valley Urban Farm is a non-profit organization helping Birmingham grow organic produce and healthy communities through urban farming and education. Our instructors are committed to being good role models for children, and promote valuable life and health skills. Kids will learn about and practice communication skills, self-discipline, cooperation, problem solving, and perseverance on the farm. Foodie Camp also exposes kids to new perspectives about our community, farming, food, work, values, and how their values and choices impact their health and life.
